LEAP | 奪冠 (Full Review) – In Cinemas 25-1-2020

LEAP (Chinese: 夺冠) is a biographical sports film directed by Peter Chan and starring Gong Li and Huang Bo. The film is based on the story of the Chinese women’s national volleyball team, which has been around for more than 40 years. The picture was published on September 25, 2020 in mainland China and the United States. It was supposed to be released in China on January 25, 2020, the first day of the Chinese New Year, but was withdrawn due to the COVID-19 epidemic.

The Chinese title of the film was originally named “China Women’s Volleyball Team” but due to regulatory issues, it was renamed Duoguan (“to take the crown”) a day before the pre-sale of the release. Chinese entry for Best International Feature Film at the Leap 93rd Academy Awards

Leap was scheduled for release in China on January 25, 2020, but was withdrawn due to the Covid-19 epidemic. The film debuted in China on September 25, 2020, just days before the National Day of the People’s Republic of China. That weekend, due to the relaxation of the COVID-19 ban, theaters were allowed to sell up to 75% of the available tickets, compared to 50%. It debuted in the United States on the same day in 60 theaters in selected cities.
